The witness, Prof. Gad Rennert:                 No, no, you have to be careful.  Any such combination requires proof

Adv. Mr. D.  Or Chen:           We've proven it.

The witness, Prof. Gad Rennert:     How did you prove it?

The Honorable Judge D.  Chasdai: Don't interrupt it

Adv. Mr. D.  Or Chen:           Is 1 plus 2 plus 3 equal 1 plus 1 plus 1 equal to more than 3 or not?

The witness, Prof. Gad Rennert:     No, it can't be done that way.  A smoker exposed to asbestos will develop more lung cancer than those who are exposed to asbestos and those who smoke on their own.  Okay? And this could be a model that we call a multiplier multiplier.  It could be what we call additive, added.  But any such combination, such as smoking and alcohol or smoking and exposure to asbestos requires individual proof, and sometimes it can be a schema, sometimes a multiplication, and sometimes it has no effect at all.  In other words, one is so major that the other doesn't change anything anymore (page 1908).

  1. In her testimony, Dr. Sari Libiki was asked about the 'synergy' effect and answered, among other things, as follows:

Interpreter, Idit:        There is one air quality synergistic effect that is well known.

The witness, Dr. S.  Libiki: And that is exposure to radon and smoking together.

Interpreter, Idit:      And it's exposure to radon and smoking together.

The witness, Dr. S.  Libiki: Where that is understood to have a synergistic effect

Interpreter, Idit:      And here it is clear that this has a synergistic effect

The witness, Dr. S.  Libiki: There's also some indication that asbestos and smoking has a synergistic effect

Interpreter, Idit:      There is some indication that asbestos and smoking together also have a synergistic effect.

The witness, Dr. S.  Libiki: However, as I discussed in my report,

Interpreter, Idit:      But as I wrote in my report

The witness, Dr. S.  Libiki: there are, there is very little information about true synergism beyond those examples, and..

Interpreter, Idit:      There is very little information about true synergy beyond these examples I have given, and in addition.
