Phone hacking incident
- Shteif explained that at the end of the meeting, "when Yuli said goodbye to us because he was gone, I told him that if there was anything on the phones that could interest me, I would be very happy for him to let me know" (par. p. 162, paras. 23-24). When asked if she had asked Yuli to look for material of journalistic value, she replied in the negative. According to her: There never was and never was. The only time I told him was that morning when we were with Hani Naveh that I told him that if there was anything interesting related to my investigative report, let me know. If we move on, you will see that from the moment he took the phones until the meeting on Sunday, there was no contact between us (Par. p. 198, paras. 15-17).
A similar version arose from Yuli's testimony, according to which Shteif told him, "If there is something interesting (in the devices - A.S.) Update" (par. p. 310, para. 11). When asked what he meant by "something interesting", he replied: "She didn't say exactly what, we know what Hadas is about, especially when Hadas had all kinds of material on my nose, I imagine that is the direction, nothing explicit was said" (par. p. 310, paras. 13-14).
- After the meeting, Yuli sent a messenger on his behalf to collect the devices from the Spy Shop business. The devices reached him a day or two after his meeting with Hani and Steif (par. p. 310, paras. 5-6). At this point, he worked to hack the password-protected devices, and he even succeeded in doing so. According to him: "There are a number of devices, some of which are very easy to open, closed in a 4-digit code, like you try to enter a random number, dates of birth, anything else, that's the code that was. There is a program that opens them, so the programs were also on the Internet, you connect to a computer, a USB cable, run the software, sometimes it takes a minute, sometimes 5 minutes and sometimes an hour, the combination was not that complicated" and then "the screen opens. It's not that the device appears on the computer, you can do whatever you want with the device is a phone without a code" (par. p. 310, paras. 25-28,30-31). In his testimony to the police and in his cross-examination, Yuli also confirmed that he had broken into the devices (par. p. 316, paras. 26-28, p. 321, paras. 20-21; P/23).
- Yuli explained that after he hacked into the devices, he was exposed to a lot of information that was stored in them. According to him, the material also included "a lot of recorded conversations" (par. p. 323, paras. 8-9), and also: "There were thousands or many hundreds (of recordings - A.S.)." (Par. p. 323, para. 12). Yuli called Steif and asked her to come to his house. According to him: "I called Hadas because what I saw there I had to call NATO, there were adulterers there... a lot. One phone he used for 4 months... women. That's the little trouble. What was there should not interest Hadas because Hadas is in contact with the police, she's a police reporter, she understands about as much as I do what that means" (par. p. 310, paras. 35-36, p. 311, paras. 1-2).
- Shteif explained that "I don't remember if it was Saturday night or Sunday morning, Yuli called me and told me Hadas, come to me tomorrow morning, it's important" (par. p. 162, paras. 32-33). When asked why Yuli called her and not Hanni, she replied: "Yuli worked with me on quite a few cases of abuse of authority, especially in the police, Yuli knew about the investigation I was doing that had to do with abuse of authority. I assume that he knew that it was something that might interest me, and I assume that when he was exposed to the materials, he understood that these were materials that the public had the right to know" (par. p. 163, paras. 1-3).
- According to her, she canceled all the meetings she had and went to Yuli's home in Ashkelon. When she arrived, "Yuli uploaded material from his computer to the TV in the living room. It was arranged by folders and names, and I skimmed through and my stomach turned upside down. I couldn't believe it" (par. 163, paras. 8-10). And also: "Yuli made the first division and I asked to separate in something that I wanted more comfortable and that would not be inclusive (par. p. 200, paras. 18-19). This division, which was made under Steif's guidance, shows that the matter ofHani's personal personalities were not the motive for Naveh's invasion of privacy, but rather receiving the information for the investigation she conducted about Naveh.
Shteif added that "we are going through the headlines, I had enough of what I saw and I stop him and say that I have to talk to the commander of Galatz. In my opinion, we sat for something like two hours" (Par. p. 195, paras. 20-21). Yuli arranged the materials he saw on the devices in folders and downloaded them to a USB flash drive (par. p. 311, paras. 7-9, p. 321, paras. 6-7). A similar version arose from Shteif's testimony, which explained that "the vast majority was arranged by Yuli, he was exposed to the materials for the first time. Afterwards, at my request, he split two other folders, maybe three" (par. p. 165, paras. 22-23).
