Shteif explained that Chani had come to the meeting with her and not with Yuli. Therefore, when Chani arrived at the café in Mandarin, Shteif moved from the table where she was sitting with Yuli to another table, where only she and Hani sat (par. p. 161, paras. 5-6). Similar versions arose from the testimony of Chani (par. p. 225, paras. 30-31) and also from the testimony of Yuli (par. p. 309, paras. 24-25,29).
- At this point, Chani shared with Steif the divorce process that was taking place between her and Naveh at the time. In addition, Chani shared with Steif about the devices in her home, and she wanted to derive information from them: "I am in negotiations with Effi and she asked me if I had an actuary or an accountant and I said that I was negotiating in complete darkness and she advised me to take an accountant and an actuary and not to sign an agreement without knowing my full rights. At the end of the conversation on my own initiative, I told her that I had a number of old mobile phones at home and I put them in the lab to open them and they told me that the lab was not busy and that I had to look for someone to open them for me" (para. pp. 10-14).
- According to Hani, at this point Steif told her that she knew "private investigators and cyber people" who could unlock the devices and extract information from them. After making two phone calls to different people, "one of them did not answer and the other said I would bring the phones" (para. p. 226, paras. 15-16), Shteif decided to turn to Yuli and ask him if he could help in this matter. This is what emerged from Chani's testimony:
"She said wait a minute, maybe we can ask Yuli and then she called Yuli to join our conversation, he asked me what mobile phones I had and I told him the type and he said it was a simple procedure, to connect a cable to the computer and he could try to help. Because at that point I still hadn't inquired enough about the next station from Moti Golan and I didn't find someone to open the mobiles for me, I said instead of wasting time I'd bring it to Yuli and we'll see how we go from there."
